The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Government of Turkmenistan held a preparatory meeting this week ahead of Turkmenistan's upcoming dialogue with the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). The meeting, held in Ashgabat, brought together members of Turkmenistan's delegation who will participate in the dialog with CERD, which will take place in Geneva on August 21-22. This is reported in a UNDP press release.
Turkmenistan ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination in 1994 and has submitted periodic reports on the implementation of this treaty. The upcoming CERD Dialogue will review Turkmenistan's latest report for 2016-2019 and demonstrate the country's fulfillment of its obligations under the Convention. The progress made by Turkmenistan since the last review will also be presented.
The National Action Plan on Human Rights in Turkmenistan for 2021-2025 is aimed at further strengthening the national human rights system, fulfilling international human rights obligations and expanding cooperation with international human rights organizations. UNDP in Turkmenistan is supporting the implementation of the action plan as part of a joint project aimed at harmonizing Turkmenistan's national legislation with international human rights standards.
The CERD dialogue provided an important opportunity for Turkmenistan to publicize its efforts to eliminate racial discrimination and protect human rights. Constructive engagement with the Committee and the recommendations arising from the review will help guide Turkmenistan's continued progress in implementing the Convention.
