Turkmenistan and Armenia hold conference dedicated to Makhtumkuli Fraghi

Representatives of Turkmenistan and Armenia held an international scientific and methodological conference and literary readings. The event was dedicated to the life and creative work of Makhtumkuli Fraghi. It was held within the framework of agreements on cooperation in the field of science and education concluded between the Makhtumkuli Turkmen State University (TSU) and the Yerevan State University (YSU).

The delegation included Amannepes Shikhnepesov, head of the Turkmen Literature Chair, Romanguli Mustakov, head of the Foreign Literature Chair, Gulrukh Gurbanova, senior teacher of the Turkmen Language Chair, as well as students of the university.

The Armenian side was represented by Alexander Safaryan, Head of the Department of Turkic Studies at Yerevan State University, Amalia Petrosyan, Associate Professor of the same Department, and Varuzhan Khastur, famous poet-translator. The latter read out his own translations into Armenian of Mahtumkuli's poems.

Artur Israelyan, YSU Vice-rector in charge of international cooperation and public relations, addressed the conference participants with a welcoming speech. He noted that the Turkmen-Armenian cooperation is extremely fruitful. The third edition of selected works by the great Turkmen poet and philosopher Makhtumkuli Fraghi attests to this. The foreword to the book was written personally by Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, President of Turkmenistan, an Honorary Doctor of YSU, in 2014.

The Head of the Department of Turkic Studies of the YSU A. Safaryan initiated the publication of an anthology of Turkmen literature in the Armenian language. It is supposed to include not only classic literature, but also works by modern writers. The publication will be timed to coincide with the 300th anniversary of Makhtumkuli Fraghi, which will be celebrated worldwide in 2024.

Speaking about the humanism of Makhtumkuli Fraghi and the values common to all mankind, the TSU delegates noted that the poet is a true phenomenon in the history of the Turkmen people. The importance of humanitarian relations between Turkmenistan and Armenia was also emphasized.

The participants noted that cooperation between the two key universities in Turkmenistan and Armenia plays an important role in strengthening Turkmen-Armenian relations in the sphere of culture and science.

In addition to poet-translator Varuzhan Hastur, TSU students took part in the literary readings, reciting selected poems of their famous countryman.
