During the regular meeting of ECOSOC on December 5, Turkmenistan was unanimously elected as a member of the Commission on Population and Development for the period of 2024-2028. This is reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
Turkmenistan is currently serving as a member of the Commission for two terms - 2016-2020 and 2020-2024. The Commission on Population and Development is a supervisory, coordinating and advisory functional body of the Council on population problems and introduction of global strategies into national programs.
The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs is the permanent secretariat of the Commission. The heads of the State Committee on Statistics of Turkmenistan participate annually in the sessions in New York.
