155th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi celebrated in Ashgabat

Yesterday, October 2, the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan hosted a conference dedicated to the philosophical legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. The event was timed to coincide with the 155th anniversary of the birth of the great peacemaker and the International Day of Non-Violence.

According to Arzuw.news correspondent, Indian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat and Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Myahri Byashimova delivered keynote speeches during the conference.

"Mahatma Gandhi's ideas of non-violence, understanding and intercultural dialog continue to inspire millions of people around the world."

- Myahri Byashimova emphasized in her speech. She also noted that the principles of peacefulness and good-neighborliness adhered to by neutral Turkmenistan are in many respects in line with the ideas of the great Indian leader.

The conference participants paid special attention to the recent initiative of Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to declare 2025 the "International Year of Peace and Trust". According to the Turkmen side, this decision reflects the consistent foreign policy of the country based on the principles of peacefulness and good-neighborliness.

In her address, the Ambassador of India reminded the audience of the enormous influence that Mahatma Gandhi had on the Indian independence movement and the world philosophy of non-violence. His methods of peaceful resistance and strategy of non-violent struggle remain relevant in today's world.

The conference became an important platform for discussing Mahatma Gandhi's legacy in the context of contemporary international relations and once again emphasized the significance of his philosophy for solving urgent problems of the 21st century.
