Ashgabat, Turkmenistan - On July 15, 2023, the Turkish Embassy in Turkmenistan hosted events to commemorate Democracy and National Unity Day, which marks the defeat of the coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016. A photo exhibition and a memorial evening honored 251 Turkish citizens who lost their lives defending Turkey's freedom and constitutional order against the putschists.
Democracy and National Unity Day was established in 2016 by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in memory of those who died and resisted the coup attempt seven years ago. On this day in 2016, factions of the Turkish military attempted to overthrow the government, but thousands of Turkish citizens took to the streets in support of the democratically elected government. After several hours of confrontation, the coup was put down.
The events at the Turkish Embassy emphasized solidarity with the Turkish people and appreciation for Turkmenistan's support for Turkey's democracy and constitutional order during the difficult period of 2016. A photo exhibition depicted the terrible events of seven years ago, while the memorial evening featured remarks by the Turkish Ambassador emphasizing the strong bilateral relations between the countries.
In a statement on the occasion, Turkish Deputy Ambassador to Turkmenistan Gulshah Cumurcu said:
"We are grateful for Turkmenistan's solidarity with the Turkish people during the tragic events of July 15, 2016. Today we remember those who lost their lives defending Turkey's freedom and democracy."
Events commemorating the events of July 15 underscore the close ties between the two countries, as well as Turkey's commitment to democracy and constitutional rule. Although the coup attempt failed, Democracy and National Unity Day remains a somber reminder of the people who died defending the country's democratic ideals.
