Turkmenistan to expand participation in international eco-projects

At yesterday's meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers by video link issues of foreign policy of Turkmenistan and, in particular, cooperation with the UN and other world organizations on environmental protection were discussed.

Foreign Minister Meredov noted that Turkmenistan is currently involved in 20 international environmental agreements. Based on the initiatives of the President and the importance of developing partnerships with the UN in this area, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs named a number of documents to be signed.

These include the Bonn Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Wildlife (1983), the Agreement on the Protection of Migratory African-Eurasian Waterbirds (UNEP, 1999), the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol concerning substances that are detrimental to the ozone layer (2016).

President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov noted the importance of environmental issues in the global development strategy and foreign policy of neutral Turkmenistan. He approved of Meredov's proposal to join the above-mentioned multilateral agreements and supported the initiative to continue cooperation with international partners on a long-term basis.
