UNOPS representative office started functioning in Turkmenistan

The UN Office for Project Support (UNOPS) in Turkmenistan was launched at a ceremony in the conference hall of the UN House in Ashgabat.

Heads and delegates of the Turkmen Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Turkmenistan, and UN country agencies participated in the celebration. Representatives of Japan in Turkmenistan were also invited to the event.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Vepa Hajiyev made a speech at the opening ceremony. He stressed the important role of the opening of the UNOPS office in the Turkmen capital, as it will contribute to strengthening international cooperation for the implementation of the tasks outlined by the UN-supervised program in the sphere of stable development.

Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, UNICEF Country Representative Christine Weygand also addressed the audience. She said that the launch of the UNOPS office in Turkmenistan will make a significant contribution to the implementation of projects implemented under the auspices of various UN agencies both in the country and in the region.

Freya von Groote, Head of the UNOPS Multi-Country Office in Austria, also addressed the audience via videoconference. She spoke briefly about the key aspects of the organization's activities, as well as the tasks and steps in the implementation of a new grant project aimed at strengthening Turkmenistan's health care system. The project is implemented in cooperation with Japan.

The start of UNOPS activities in Turkmenistan became an important stage in the implementation of the Framework Program of Cooperation in the sphere of stable development between the leadership of the country and the UN for the period up to 2025.
