The result of the January 11 joint meeting of both chambers of the Milli Gengesh of Turkmenistan was the abolition of the Khalk Maslakhaty as a chamber of the Milli Gengesh and the establishment on its basis of a higher representative body of popular power. At the same time, it was decided to transform Milli Gengesh, as a legislative body of power, into a one-chamber Majlis of Turkmenistan. This is reported in the Neutral Turkmenistan daily newspaper.
The representative body of people's power includes the Chairman of Khalk Maslakhaty, the President of Turkmenistan, the Chairman and deputies of the Mejlis, members of the Cabinet, the Secretary of the State Security Council, the Chairman of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General, the heads of velayats and etraps of Turkmenistan, honorary elders from the people, representatives of public organizations and lawyers. The creation of the new body is intended to contribute to the democratization of society and create favorable conditions for the participation of people's representatives in making important state decisions.
