Russian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Ivan Volynkin gave an interview this week to the news agency TASSIn his speech he spoke about the prospects for cooperation between the two countries in various fields.
Volynkin expressed hope that Turkmenistan would soon join the North-South international transport corridor, a project designed to connect India, Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia and Europe by rail and sea. According to him, this will increase the transit of goods and trade in the region and will benefit both countries.
He also noted that Russia and Turkmenistan are not competitors but partners in gas supplies to China because they have different target markets. According to him, Russia supplies gas to eastern and northern parts of China, while Turkmenistan supplies gas to western and southern areas. He added that China has sufficient demand for gas from both countries.
Volynkin named a number of possible joint projects that could strengthen bilateral cooperation, such as geological exploration, high-speed passenger traffic, and visa liberalization. He said that these projects are being discussed at various levels and could be implemented in the near future.
He also said that the financial departments of both countries are negotiating the expansion of mutual settlements in national currencies, which will reduce dependence on foreign currency exchange rates and facilitate trade. According to him, the foreign trade turnover between Russia and Turkmenistan is expected to grow as a result.
Volynkin noted the frequent visits of Russian regional leaders to Turkmenistan and the emergence of new joint projects. According to him, these visits testify to the interest and trust of both sides in the development of relations. He expressed confidence that cooperation between Russia and Turkmenistan will continue to expand and deepen.
