Turkmenistan approved the composition of the joint border commission with Uzbekistan

Turkmen President Serdar Berdymukhamedov signed a decree this week approving the Turkmen composition of a joint commission on delimitation and demarcation of the border between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. This is reported by Orient.

The commission will meet in 2023 to review draft agreements, prepared by working groups of both countries, on the official demarcation of the 1,620-kilometer border separating the two Central Asian states.

Delimitation is the establishment of a boundary line on a map through negotiation. Demarcation is the process of marking a physical boundary on the ground on the basis of a mutually ratified treaty.

The establishment of a joint commission is intended to finalize the formal demarcation of the border between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan after decades of uncertainty. The border runs through two provinces of Turkmenistan.

By approving Turkmen delegates to participate in the joint commission, Turkmenistan has made it clear that it seeks a full settlement of the border issue with its neighbor through diplomatic channels. Meetings scheduled for next year could lead to the signing of treaties between the countries formalizing and marking their common border.
