The National Railway Company of Iran (RAJA) has announced plans to launch a new international passenger route, which will connect the Iranian city of Mashhad with the Turkmen city of Mary. RAJA Director General Jabbar Ali Zakeri emphasized that the new railway line will be an important tool for strengthening economic and trade relations with Central Asian countries. According to him, the Mashhad-Mary route, once fully operational, will provide Iranian passengers with more convenient access to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
In parallel with the Turkmen direction, RAJA is preparing to launch a direct rail link Tehran-Ankara, which will complement the existing flights to the Turkish city of Van. Currently, the Iranian and Turkish sides are agreeing on financial terms and tariff policy for this route.
The first trains on the Tehran-Ankara route may start running within the next two months. The company's future plans also include opening a passenger route that will connect the Iranian cities of Tehran and Mashhad with the Afghan city of Herat.
The development of rail links with Turkmenistan is being further supported by the completion of the Sarakhs rail terminal in Iran, located on the border with Turkmenistan. This information was published by Mehr News Agency on Sunday.
