President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov congratulated the participants of the international chess tournament among young athletes under 8, 10 and 12 years old, which opened in the capital within the framework of the International Year of Peace and Trust.
The competition is held in the capital's Specialized Chess and Chess School on the occasion of awarding Ashgabat the status of the "City of New Sports Opportunities of the Commonwealth". The tournament is designed to strengthen international cooperation in sports and promote the ideas of peace and friendship between nations.
The head of state noted the special attention Turkmenistan pays to the development of the physical culture and health movement and training of qualified athletes, coaches and specialists. Modern sports facilities are being built across the country in the era of the Renaissance of a new era: multifunctional stadiums, sports and recreation complexes and sports schools.
Turkmenistan's sports reforms have been internationally recognized. The 78th session of the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution "UN Friendship Games", and the tennis complex in the Olympic City was declared "Training Center of the Asian Region" by the Asian Tennis Federation.
Chess has deep roots in Turkmen culture - it is mentioned in national epics and folk tales under the names "Sadranç" and "Şahmat". This intellectual game was included in the program of the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
Specialists note that children who start studying chess at the age of 5-8 years demonstrate better abilities to memorize complex combinations and tactics. Turkmen chess players regularly participate in international tournaments and win prizes.
