Turkmenistan elected to UN ECOSOC for 2026-2028

Turkmenistan elected to the UN Economic and Social Council

Turkmenistan became a member of the UN Economic and Social Council for the third time. The decision was made on June 4, 2025 at the 75th plenary meeting of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly. The country's mandate in ECOSOC will be valid from 2026 to 2028.

Election to this influential body confirms Turkmenistan's growing role in international affairs. ECOSOC serves as the main coordinator of the economic and social activities of the entire United Nations system.

The Council plays a key role in advancing sustainable development on three fronts: economic, social and environmental. It is composed of 54 Member States elected by the General Assembly for a three-year term.

The ECOSOC renewal procedure involves the annual election of 18 countries from different regional groups. They replace states whose mandate is coming to an end.

This is already the third membership in the Council for Turkmenistan. Previously, the country was a member of ECOSOC in 2013-2015 and 2019-2021, which demonstrates the stable confidence of the international community in Turkmen diplomacy.
